Is the wall load-bearing?

General information:

A load-bearing wall must support loads from an upper floor or the load from the outer roof. Roof trusses or floor joists from the upper floor usually rest on a load-bearing wall. It can sometimes be difficult to know if a wall is load-bearing or if it is only a partition. If the rafters or the upper floor joist rests on the wall, and if it runs in the same direction as the ridge, it is most likely load-bearing.

It requires caution and a careful analysis of the direction of the floor joists in the floor above. We analyze the structural drawings of the property to determine if a wall is load-bearing or not. We believe that this is the safest and most correct way to determine whether the wall is load-bearing or not.

Making a new opening in/or completely removing a load-bearing wall is a major intervention and responsibility. An experienced structural engineer can produce drawings for how an alternation should look and work. In these drawings, you can see how columns/beams should be placed, as well as which type of beams/columns should be used. The type of beam/column to be used is based on the calculations carried out by the structural engineer.

If the wall is non-load-bearing, no reinforcement is usually needed. However, we always recommend stamping the joists before demolishing a wall.

It may also be the case that the wall is involuntarily load-bearing, especially in older houses, this is difficult to investigate and determine.

To be able to investigate whether a wall is load-bearing, one must check the direction of the floor joists on the upper floor. Even if a partition is not load-bearing, it may be found that it replaces a floor joist in the joist above.

Partitions in houses with a plank frame usually have a stabilizing function. This applies especially to long exterior walls. It may therefore be appropriate to leave a piece of the wall.

In summary, it can be said that all walls can be load-bearing in houses with a flat frame. A careful analysis of the direction of the floor joists in the upper floor is required. Walls on the top floor, directly under the attic and running in the middle of the house in the direction of the roof ridge, are always load-bearing.

Here you can usually assume that all floor joists, regardless of floor level, lie in the direction of the trusses. It is only the heart walls that are load-bearing, apart from the outer walls.

It is not certain that a heart wall goes as a straight line on the drawing. It can zigzag forward. There are usually several parallel heart walls in a house that is wider than about 8 meters. However, there are two exceptions. Houses that are narrower than 4 meters rarely have a heart wall. Houses that have truss-type trusses, e.g. w trusses, which are self-supporting, do not need to have a core wall in the top plane.
